Summer days in the sun!

Although summer vacation is coming to an end, those hot sunny days are going to be sticking around for a few more months. With this in mind we want to help educate you about sun protection! There is much debate going on with what is the safest and most effective sunscreen to apply.

First, let’s talk about the different classes of sunscreen. Physical sunscreens and Chemical sunscreens. Physical sunscreens work by sitting on top of the skin and physically blocking the rays whereas chemical sunscreens absorb the rays and convert the uv rays to heat which is then released from the skin.

A recent study showed significant absorption of the chemical sunscreen ingredients into the body; therefore, the FDA is now asking for more safety data be gathered on 12 ingredients commonly used in chemical sunscreens. 7 of the 12 ingredients are commonly used in US sunscreens these are: ensulizole, octisalate, homosalate, octocrylene, octinoxate, oxybenzone, avobenzone.

Given all this information to date we at Dynamic Dermatology recommend using physical sunscreens due to them having extensive safety and efficacy profiles. Remember the physical sunscreens contain zinc oxide and titanium oxide. Some of our favorites include ISDIN Eryfotona Actinia, Sun Bum Mineral, BareRepublic Mineral and EltaMD Elements.

UV exposure is at its peak between the hours of 10am and 2 pm so don’t forget to wear your sun protective clothing including rash guards, hats, sunglasses and to stay in the shade whenever able. We here at Dynamic Dermatology hope you have a fun and shady day!
