Laser Hair Removal

Laser Hair Removal San Antonio

Finally, an end to shaving, tweezing, and waxing.

Let’s be honest, body hair care can be time consuming and tedious. It can make you late to events, or leave you with bumps and cuts.

The solution? Laser hair removal at Dynamic Dermatology. Laser hair removal is a quick, effective method to rid your body or face of unwanted hair. In the long run, you’ll save not only time, but money as well.

So what is laser hair removal?

Laser hair removal is a procedure that uses concentrated beams of light to remove unwanted hair. During the laser hair removal process at Dynamic Dermatology, your provider will use a laser to emit a light that will be absorbed by the hair’s pigment. This light energy is then converted into heat, effectively damaging the hair follicles that produce hair in the affected area, which inhibits future growth.

It should be noted that while this tried-and-true treatment method will work for long periods of time, it is not a permanent solution. Some people will experience a near permanent loss but for most people, some hair regrows eventually. The good news is that with this method you can have an effective solution that lasts for years and if there is regrowth, follow up treatment is quicker and more effective!

Initially, the process takes a few treatments due to the different stages of the hair growth cycle. However, once this is accomplished you can expect no additional hair growth for a long time. Additionally, each subsequent treatment often extends the amount of time between sessions.

Am I a candidate for laser hair removal?

Traditionally, darker pigmented skin tones have presented with more risks and complications (such as burns, scarring or discoloration) in laser hair removal. As laser hair removal works by distinguishing the hair follicle from the pigment of the skin, it has traditionally been easier to treat patients with light or fair skin.

At Dynamic Dermatology, we have invested in the GentleMax Pro laser hair removal device. The GentleMax Pro has two wavelengths that allow us to safely treat darker skin types as well as lighter skin types. The 1064mm wavelength (aka Nd:Yag) is not as easily absorbed by melanin in your skin and therefore has very minimal risk of discoloration or burns on dark skin types. The 755mm wavelength (aka Alexandrite) is also used on the GentleMax Pro platform which allows us to tailor the perfect treatment for each patient no matter what your skin color is.

Laser hair removal has been used by both men and women. In fact, some of our most satisfied customers have been men who no longer have razor burn bumps on their face and neck from shaving daily.

How do I prepare for laser hair removal?

The first step in preparing for laser hair removal at Dynamic Dermatology is a consultation with one of our experts. Here we will present you with all of the procedural details, discuss medical history to rule out underlying health conditions, and take photos for analysis purposes.

Once you’ve been informed about treatment plans and pricing and want to move forward with your laser hair removal at Dynamic Dermatology, you’ll be given additional preparation advice such as:

Avoiding sun exposure: it’s important to take care of the skin leading up to the removal procedure. Use sunscreen whenever you expect sun exposure for extended periods of time.

Avoiding other methods of hair removal: waxing, plucking, foam based products, etc can irritate the hair follicle and should be avoided for the weeks leading up to your hair removal.

Shaving the treatment area the day of your appointment: this will help to avoid accidental burnt hairs above the skin. The underlying follicle will not be affected.

What does my procedure day look like?

During the procedure you’ll start off by wearing protective goggles to protect you from the laser light. Your treatment professional at Dynamic Dermatology may determine that one more shave of the treatment area is necessary, or decide that a topical anaesthetic may be needed to avoid any unnecessary discomfort.

Once your prep is complete, the laser, equipped with a cooling device will be maneuvered over the treatment area converting light energy to heat in order to damage the hair follicle and inhibit growth. You will feel a type of sharp, warming sensation that could be mildly uncomfortable but not painful.

Your procedure length depends entirely on the treatment area. Something like an upper lip area may take minutes. However, a full back treatment could be 30 to 45 minutes to complete..

What about after the procedure?

At the conclusion of your laser hair removal at Dynamic Dermatology, you may have some mild redness or swelling for a few hours. This is expected and shouldn’t cause any alarm for a laser procedure.

You can apply ice to the area for comfort. If the treatment area develops any kind of reaction your doctor can issue a steroid cream.

For the next few weeks, avoid extended sun exposure and if you do find yourself in the sun for extended periods be sure to use sunscreen.

What kind of results can I expect?

Your hair will not simply fall out immediately. Over the next few days or even weeks, your hair will shed and you will have noticeable reduction after your first treatment

Due to the life cycle of your hair, 4-6 initial treatments are recommended. Laser hair removal works best with new hair growth. Your doctor will let you know when you can come back for subsequent appointments, but once the initial treatments are completed you will be hair-free for years. Even when hair does come back it will usually do so both lighter and thinner and many times, the regrowth will not require shaving.

If there is regrowth that needs to be addressed in the future, treatments are quicker and longer lasting than previous sessions.
