Intense Pulsed Light

IPL, or Intense Pulsed Light

Unwanted skin pigmentation concerns? Say goodbye!

IPL, or Intense Pulsed Light, is the treatment you’re looking for to get rid of various skin issues. With IPL you can help combat:

  • Freckles
  • Age spots
  • Birthmarks
  • Varicose Veins
  • Mild to moderate acne
  • Sun damage
  • and more!

What exactly is IPL?

IPL works by absorbing light energy in particular skin cells that contain different colors than the surrounding skin. The pulsed light is converted into heat energy, which damages the targeted area, correcting the pigmentation.

The procedure targets the dermis (the lower layers of the skin) without harming the epidermis (the top layer of skin). This causes very minimal downtime, and will have you sauntering out of the front door after your procedure, ready to get on with your normal routine.

How do I prepare for an IPL procedure?

First thing’s first: contact Dynamic Dermatology for a consultation. In your consultation, your IPL expert will examine your skin and determine whether or not pigmentation correction can be achieved with an IPL procedure. You will then discuss goals, medical conditions, allergies, and any other topics that will help you and your doctor plan the upcoming procedure.

A treatment plan will determine steps to take leading up to the procedure, as well as how many treatments should be expected for your specific issue.

Now, it’s important to take care of your skin! This includes the following:

  • Avoiding excessive sun exposure
  • Avoiding harsh creams
  • Avoiding certain anti-inflammatory medications
  • Hydrating
  • Moisturizing and applying daily sunscreen

What will my IPL procedure be like?

There is no need to be stressed or worried! IPL procedures are fairly straightforward and harmless. Upon arrival you will be given protective goggles, and have a protective gel applied to the treatment area. The latter will keep your epidermis from incurring any damage.

Your doctor will then use the IPL device to go over the treatment area and start fading the unwanted pigmentation. IPL devices also have built-in cooling systems for additional protection from any irritation during the treatment.

The treatment generally lasts around 30 minutes, but can obviously vary depending on the size of the treatment area. For maximum results, your doctor may suggest multiple sessions. This, of course, will be discussed during the consultation period, so this will not be new news on the day of your procedure. Most cases see optimal results in 4 to 6 treatments, and each treatment usually requires about a month of recovery between sessions.

Recovery and Results

As aforementioned, you should be able to get right back to normal activity following your procedure. The only exceptions would be activities that involve extended sun exposure. Those might have to wait a day or two as your skin will feel as if you’ve experienced a mild sunburn. It may also be wise to avoid overly hot water for a time, such as hot showers or hot tubs.

Slightly red or sensitive skin is an expected side effect that quickly goes away. Other side effects include bruising, blistering, or hair loss in the affected area. However, with reputable experts such as the ones at Dynamic Dermatology, you should not expect these harsher side effects and can be confident in a quick recovery from any initial discomfort.

Great results can also be expected, as an IPL procedure is a fantastic way to minimize or completely rid targeted areas of pigmentation issues. IPL can lead to incredible results with aging pigmentation issues as well. However, keep in mind that the body does continue to age regardless of treatment, so new aging spots or varicose veins can still appear in the future.
